John Doe: It's more comfortable for you to label me as insane.
David Mills: It's VERY comfortable.
David Mills: Wait, I thought all you did was kill innocent people.
John Doe: Innocent? Is that supposed to be funny? An obese man... a disgusting man who could barely stand up; a man who if you saw him on the street, you'd point him out to your friends so that they could join you in mocking him; a man, who if you saw him while you were eating, you wouldn't be able to finish your meal. After him, I picked the lawyer and I know you both must have been secretly thanking me for that one. This is a man who dedicated his life to making money by lying with every breath that he could muster to keeping murderers and rapists on the streets!
David Mills: Murderers?
John Doe: A woman...
David Mills: Murderers, John, like yourself?
John Doe: [
interrupts] A woman... so ugly on the inside she couldn't bear to go on living if she couldn't be beautiful on the outside. A drug dealer, a drug dealing pederast, actually! And let's not forget the disease-spreading whore! Only in a world this shitty could you even try to say these were innocent people and keep a straight face. But that's the point. We see a deadly sin on every street corner, in every home, and we tolerate it. We tolerate it because it's common, it's trivial. We tolerate it morning, noon, and night. Well, not anymore. I'm setting the example. What I've done is going to be puzzled over and studied and followed... forever.
William Somerset: If you kill him, he wins.
David Mills: Do you like what you do for a living? These things you see?
Man in Massage Parlour Booth: No, I don't. But that's life.
William Somerset: [
to Tracy] Anyone who spends a significant amount of time with me finds me disagreeable. Just ask your husband.
David Mills: Very true. Very, very true.
David Mills: Yeah, a landlord's dream: a paralyzed tenant with no tongue.
William Somerset: Who pays the rent on time.
William Somerset: I just don't think I can continue to live in a place that embraces and nurtures apathy as if it was virtue.
David Mills: You're no different. You're no better.
William Somerset: I didn't say I was different or better. I'm not. Hell, I sympathize; I sympathize completely. Apathy is the solution. I mean, it's easier to lose yourself in drugs than it is to cope with life. It's easier to steal what you want than it is to earn it. It's easier to beat a child than it is to raise it. Hell, love costs: it takes effort and work.
David Mills: Fuckin' Dante... poetry-writing faggot! Piece of shit, motherfucker!
Dr. Beardsley: He's experienced about as much pain and suffering as anyone I've encountered, give or take, and he still has Hell to look forward to.
David Mills: Has he tried to speak or communicate in any way?
Dr. Beardsley: Even if his brain were not mush, which it is, he chewed off his own tongue long ago.
William Somerset: Uh... Doc, is there absolutely no chance that he might survive?
Dr. Beardsley: Detective, he'd die of shock right now if you were to shine a flashlight in his eyes. He's experienced about as much pain and suffering as anyone I've encountered, give or take... and he still has hell to look forward to. Good night.
John Doe: Realize detective, the only reason that I'm here right now is that I wanted to be.
David Mills: No, no, we would have got you eventually.
John Doe: Oh really? So, what were you doing? Biding your time? Toying with me? Allowing five innocent people to die until you felt like springing your trap? Tell me, what was the indisputable evidence you were going to use on me right before I walked up to you and put my hands in the air?
John Doe: What sick ridiculous puppets we are / and what gross little stage we dance on / What fun we have dancing and fucking / Not a care in the world / Not knowing that we are nothing / We are not what was intended.
John Doe: Wanting people to listen, you can't just tap them on the shoulder anymore. You have to hit them with a sledgehammer, and then you'll notice you've got their strict attention.
William Somerset: This guy's methodical, exacting, and worst of all, patient.
David Mills: He's a nut-bag! Just because the fucker's got a library card doesn't make him Yoda!
[
first lines]
Detective Taylor: Neighbors heard them screaming at each other, like for two hours, and it was nothing new. Then they heard the gun go off, both barrels. Crime of passion.
William Somerset: Yeah, just look at all the passion on that wall.
William Somerset: It's impressive to see a man feeding off his emotions.
David Mills: C'mon, he's insane. Look. Right now he's probably dancing around in his grandma's panties, yeah, rubbing himself in peanut butter.
David Mills: I don't think you're quitting because you believe these things you say. I don't. I think you want to believe them, because you're quitting. And you want me to agree with you, and you want me to say, "Yeah, yeah, yeah. You're right. It's all fucked up. It's a fucking mess. We should all go live in a fucking log cabin." But I won't. I don't agree with you. I do not. I can't.
William Somerset: This isn't going to have a happy ending.
David Mills: You're no messiah. You're a movie of the week. You're a fucking t-shirt, at best.
David Mills: I've been trying to figure something in my head, and maybe you can help me out, yeah? When a person is insane, as you clearly are, do you know that you're insane? Maybe you're just sitting around, reading "Guns and Ammo", masturbating in your own feces, do you just stop and go, "Wow! It is amazing how fucking crazy I really am!"? Yeah. Do you guys do that?
[
William Somerset looks at an object in the road]
David Mills: What do you got?
William Somerset: Dead dog.
John Doe: I didn't do that.
[
last lines]
William Somerset: Ernest Hemingway once wrote, "The world is a fine place and worth fighting for." I agree with the second part.
John Doe: It seems that envy is my sin.
David Mills: Honestly, have you ever seen anything like this?
William Somerset: No.
John Doe: Become vengeance, David. Become wrath.
William Somerset: If we catch John Doe and he turns out to be the devil, I mean if he's Satan himself, that might live up to our expectations, but he's not the devil. He's just a man.
William Somerset: [
Reading from one of John Doe's journals] On the subway today, a man came up to me to start a conversation. He made small talk, a lonely man talking about the weather and other things. I tried to be pleasant and accommodating, but my head hurt from his banality. I almost didn't notice it had happened, but I suddenly threw up all over him. He was not pleased, and I couldn't stop laughing.
John Doe: Don't ask me to pity those people. I don't mourn them any more than I do the thousands that died at Sodom and Gomorrah.
William Somerset: Is that to say, John, that what you were doing was God's good work?
John Doe: The Lord works in mysterious ways.
William Somerset: If John Doe's head splits open and a UFO should fly out, I want you to have expected it.
California: Somebody call somebody.
David Mills: Get out of the FUCKING HALL, police!
David Mills: He's fuckin' with us!
[
Mills bends over a desk]
David Mills: See this? This is us.
William Somerset: Did the kid see it?
Detective Taylor: What?
William Somerset: The kid
Detective Taylor: What the fuck sort of question is that? You know, we're all going to be really glad when we get rid of you, Somerset. It's always these questions with you. "Did the kid see it?" Who gives a fuck? He's dead, his wife killed him. Anything else has nothing to do with us.
David Mills: You've read my files, right? You've seen the things I've done?
William Somerset: No.
William Somerset: I meant to ask you something before, when we spoke on the phone: Why here?
David Mills: I don't follow.
William Somerset: Why all the effort to get transferred? It's the first question that popped into my head.
David Mills: I guess the same reasons as you. The same reasons you had before you decided to quit, yeah?
William Somerset: Y... You just met me.
David Mills: Maybe I'm not understanding the question.
William Somerset: Very simple. You actually fought to get re-assigned here. I've just never seen it done that way before.
David Mills: Now, I wasn't standing around guarding the taco-bell, alright? I worked homicide for five years.
William Somerset: Not here.
David Mills: I understand that.
William Somerset: Well, over the next seven days, Detective, you'll do me the favour of remembering that.
Police Captain: [
to Mills] What do you think?
David Mills: I'm in.
Mark Swarr: It has to be both of you.
William Somerset: If he were to claim insanity, this conversation is admissable. The fact that he's blackmailing us with his plea...
Mark Swarr: And my client reminds you, two more are dead. The press would have a field day if they found out the police didn't seem too concerned about finding them... giving them a proper burial
William Somerset: If there really are two more dead.
Mark Swarr: My client says there are two more bodies... two more victims, hidden away. He will take Detectives Mills and Somerset to these bodies, but only Detectives Mills and Somerset. Only at six o'clock today.
David Mills: Why us?
Mark Swarr: He says he admires you.
David Mills: How is it working for a scumbug like this? You proud of yourself?
Police Captain: Ease back, Mills.
Mark Swarr: I'm required by law to serve my clients to the best of my ability, and to serve their best interests.
David Mills: I seem to remember us knocking on your door.
John Doe: Oh, that's right. And I seem to remember breaking your face.
Police Captain: [
answering phone that interrupted his conversation] This is not even my desk!
[
hangs up]
William Somerset: [
as SWAT prepare to breach and clear] They love this.
William Somerset: [
discovering what's inside the package] California, tell your people to stay away. Stay away now, don't - don't come in here. Whatever you hear, stay away! John Doe has the upper hand!
David Mills: What's in the box?
California: [
to Victor] You got what you deserved.
William Somerset: We'll just talk to him.
David Mills: Uh huh. Yeah. Excuse me, sir. Are you, by any chance, a serial killer? Okay.
William Somerset: You do the talking. Put that silver tongue of yours to work.
David Mills: Have you been talking to my wife?
[
picks up the phone]
David Mills: Hello?
John Doe: I admire you. I don't know how you found me, but imagine my surprise. I respect you law enforcement agents more everyday.
David Mills: Well, I appreciate that... John. I tell you...
John Doe: No, no, you listen, all right? I'll be readjusting my schedule in light of today's little... setback. I just had to call and express my admiration. Sorry I had to hurt... one of you, but I really didn't have a choice, did I?
David Mills: Hmm.
John Doe: You will accept my apology, won't you? I feel like saying more, but I don't want to ruin the surprise.
[
hangs up]
John Doe: [
to Mills] Detective. Detective. DETECTIVE! You're looking for me.
Photographer: I got your picture man, I got your picture!
David Mills: Oh yeah? Detective Mills, M-I-L-L-S, fuck you!
David Mills: How much money do we have left?
William Somerset: People don't want a hero, they want to eat cheeseburgers, play the lotto and watch television.
David Mills: [
greeting his wife after coming home from work] Hey, loser.
Tracy Mills: Hi, idiot.
John Doe: I visited your home this morning after you'd left. I tried to play husband. I tried to taste the life of a simple man. It didn't work out, so I took a souvenir... her pretty head.
Police Captain: You're retiring, six more days and you're all the way gone.
Crazed Man in Massage Parlour: Get this thing off of me! Get this thing off of me!
William Somerset: [
after finding out that Detective Mills's apartment is close to the railway tracks] Just a soothing, relaxing, vibrating home huh?
[
chuckles to himself]
William Somerset: [
recovers] I'm sorry.
[
laughs hysterically, Tracy joins in]
John Doe: [
about Tracy to Mills] She begged for her life...
William Somerset: Shut up!
John Doe: She begged for her life and...
William Somerset: Shut up!
John Doe: She begged for her life and the life of the baby inside her.
[
Somerset punches him]
John Doe: Oh... he didn't know.
William Somerset: Gentlemen, gentlemen... All these books, a world of knowledge at your fingertips, and you play poker all night.
Library Guard: We've got culture! We've got culture comin' out our asses!
George, Library Night Guard: [
turns on classical music] How's this for culture?
George, Library Night Guard: You're going to miss us.
William Somerset: I think I just might!
John Doe: Nothing wrong with a man taking pleasure in his work. I won't deny my own personal desire to turn each sin against the sinner.
Crazed Man in Massage Parlour: He-he put that thing on me...! He made me wear it!... He told me to fuck her, and... and I did! I fucked her! He had a gun in my mouth! The fucking gun was in my throat! FUCK! Oh, god, oh, god... please help me. Help me. Please help me.
David Mills: Who knows. So many freaks out there doin' their little evil deeds they don't wanna do... "The voices made me do it. My dog made me do it. Jodie Foster told me to do it."
David Mills: Ladies and gentlemen, we have ourselves a homicide.
Cop on SWAT Team: [
preparing to break down a door] SWAT goes before dicks.
Aragorn: We have time. Every day Frodo moves closer to Mordor.
Gandalf: Do we know that?
Aragorn: What does your heart tell you?
Gandalf: That Frodo is alive. Yes. Yes, he's alive.
Merry: [
triumphantly, as Barad-Dur crumbles] Frodo! Frodo!
Aragorn: For Frodo!
Aragorn: Let the lord of the Black Land come forth! Let justice be done upon him!
The Mouth of Sauron: My master, Sauron the Great, bids thee welcome. Is there any in this rout with authority to treat with me?
Gandalf: We do not come to treat with Sauron, faithless and accursed. Tell your master this: the armies of Mordor must disband. He is to depart these lands, never to return.
The Mouth of Sauron: Ahh, old grey beard. I have a token I was bidden to show thee.
[
Pulls out Frodo's mithril vest and throws it at them]
Pippin: [
whispers] Frodo...
Gandalf: Silence.
Merry: No!
Gandalf: Silence!
The Mouth of Sauron: The halfling was dear to thee, I see. Know that he suffered greatly at the hands of his host. Who would've thought one so small could endure so much pain? And he did, Gandalf, he did.
[
pause; Aragorn rides towards the Mouth of Sauron]
The Mouth of Sauron: And who is this? Isildur's heir? It takes more to make a king that a broken Elvish blade...
[
Aragorn cuts off the Mouth of Sauron's head with one stroke of Anduril]
Gimli: I guess that concludes negotiations.
Aragorn: [
to Gandalf] I do not believe it! I will not!
Sam: [
Both are overcome by exhaustion] Do you remember the Shire, Mr. Frodo? It'll be spring soon. And the orchards will be in blossom. And the birds will be nesting in the hazel thicket. And they'll be sowing the summer barley in the lower fields... and eating the first of the strawberries with cream. Do you remember the taste of strawberries?
Frodo: No, Sam. I can't recall the taste of food... nor the sound of water... nor the touch of grass. I'm... naked in the dark, with nothing, no veil... between me... and the wheel of fire! I can see him... with my waking eyes!
Sam: Then let us be rid of it... once and for all! Come on, Mr. Frodo. I can't carry it for you... but I can carry you!
Sam: FRODO!
Frodo: I'm here Sam.
Sam: Destroy it!
[
Frodo holds the ring on its chain over the edge of the pit]
Sam: Go on! Now! Throw it in the fire!
[
Frodo stares at the ring, the ring whispers to him]
Sam: What are you waiting for? Just let it go!
[
Frodo turns and looks at Sam]
Frodo: The ring is mine.
[
He snaps the chain and approaches the ring to his finger]
Sam: No... no...
[
Frodo slips the ring on and vanishes]
Sam: NO!
Sam: [
tearing the spider silk away from Frodo's face] Oh no! Frodo... Mr. Frodo, wake up... Don't leave me here alone. Don't go where I can't follow... Wake up.
Sam: I don't think there will be a return journey, Mr. Frodo.
Galadriel: The power of the Three Rings is ended. The time has come... for the dominion of Men.
Elrond: [
in Elvish] The Sea calls us home.
Bilbo: [
smiling] I think I'm... quite ready for another adventure!
[
Bilbo climbs on board with Elrond. Galadriel follows with Celeborn]
Gandalf: Farewell, my brave Hobbits. My work is now finished. Here at last, on the shores of the sea... comes the end of our Fellowship. I will not say do not weep, for not all tears are an evil.
[
Heads to the ship, then turns around, waiting]
Gandalf: It is time, Frodo.
Sam: What does he mean?
Frodo: We set out to save the Shire, Sam. And it has been saved... But not for me.
Sam: [
weeping] You don't mean that. You can't leave.
Frodo: [
hands Sam the Red Book] The last pages are for you, Sam.
Gandalf: He's suffered a defeat, yes, but... behind the walls of Mordor, our enemy is regrouping.
Gimli: Let him stay there. *Let him rot!* Why should we care?
Gandalf: Because 10,000 Orcs now stand between Frodo and Mount Doom. I've sent him to his death.
Aragorn: No. There is still hope for Frodo. He needs time... and safe passage across the plains of Gorgoroth. We can give him that.
Gimli: How?
Aragorn: Draw out Sauron's armies. Empty his lands. Then we gather our full strength and march on the Black Gate.
Eomer: We cannot achieve victory through strength of arms.
Aragorn: Not for ourselves. But we can give Frodo his chance if we keep Sauron's Eye fixed upon us. Keep him blind to all else that moves.
Legolas: A diversion.
Gimli: Certainty of death, *small* chance of success... What are we waiting for?
Gandalf: Sauron will suspect a trap. He will not take the bait.
Aragorn: [
knowingly] No, I think he will.
Sam: There and Back Again: A Hobbit's Tale by Bilbo Baggins, and The Lord of the Rings by Frodo Baggins. You finished it.
Frodo: Not quite. There's room for a little more.
Gollum: Wake up. Wake up. Wake up, sleepies. We must go, yeeees, we must go at once.
Sam: Haven't you had any sleep, Mr. Frodo?
[
Frodo shakes his head]
Sam: I've gone and had too much... it must be getting late.
Frodo: No, it isn't. It isn't midday, yet. The days are growing darker.
Gollum: Come on! We must go, no time!
Sam: Not before Mr. Frodo's had something to eat.
Gollum: [
impatiently] No time to lose, silly!
Sam: [
Gives Frodo lembas] Here.
Frodo: What about you?
Sam: Oh no, I'm not hungry. Leastways, not for lembas bread.
Frodo: Sam...
Sam: All right... we don't have that much left. We have to be careful, we don't want to run out. You go ahead and eat that, Mr. Frodo. I've rationed it... there should be enough.
Frodo: Enough for what?
Sam: The journey home.
Pippin: Gandalf, forgive me.
Gandalf: Look at me. What did you see?
Pippin: A tree. There was a white tree in a courtyard of stone. It was dead. The city was burning.
Gandalf: Minas Tirith? Is that what you saw?
Pippin: I saw... I saw him. I can hear his voice in my head.
Gandalf: What did you tell him? Speak!
Pippin: He asked me my name. I didn't answer. He hurt me.
Gandalf: What did you tell him about Frodo and the Ring?
[
scene cuts to later]
Gandalf: There was no lie in Pippin's eyes. A fool... but an honest fool, he remains. He told Sauron nothing of the Ring. We've been strangely fortunate. Pippin saw in the Palantir a glimpse of the enemy's plan. Sauron moves to strike Minas Tirith.
Sam: [
Frodo is being drawn toward Cirith Ungol] No, Mister Frodo!
Gollum: [
in a panic] Not that way! Oh! What's he doing?
[
extended version, the Houses of Healing]
Eowyn: The city has fallen silent. There is no warmth left in the sun.
Faramir: [
approaching her] It is only the damp of the first spring rain.
[
Eowyn looks up at him]
Faramir: I do not believe this darkness will endure.
[
in a drinking game]
Gimli: It's the Dwarves that go swimming with little, hairy woman.
[
he burps]
Legolas: I feel something. A slight tingle in my fingers. I think it's affecting me.
Gimli: What did I say? He can't hold his liquor.
[
Gimli passes out]
Legolas: [
to Eomer who is watching] Game over.
[
first lines]
Deagol: Smeagol, I've got one! I've got a fish, Smeag. Smeagol!
Smeagol: Pull it in. Go on. Go on. Go on. Pull it in.
[
from extended version]
Pippin: [
to himself] What were you thinking, Peregrin Took? What service could a hobbit offer such a great lord of men?
Faramir: [
approaching] It was well done. Generous deeds should not be checked by cold council. You are to join the tower guard?
Pippin: I didn't think they would find any livery that would fit me.
Faramir: It once belonged to a boy of the citadel. A very foolish one; who spent many hours slaying dragons instead of attending to his studies.
Pippin: This was yours?
Faramir: Yes, it was mine. My father had it made for me.
Pippin: Well, I'm taller than you were then. Though I'm not likely to grow anymore... except sideways.
[
they laugh]
Faramir: Never fitted me either. Boromir was always the soldier. They were so alike, he and my father. Proud... stubborn even. But strong.
Pippin: I think you have strength, of a different kind. And one day your father will see it.
Aragorn: I do not fear death.
Aragorn: I summon you to fulfill your oath.
King of the Dead: None but the king of Gondor may command me.
[
Swings sword; Aragorn blocks him with the sword Anduril]
King of the Dead: That blade was broken!
[
Aragorn takes him by the throat]
Aragorn: It has been remade.
[
Aragorn releases the King of the Dead; pause]
Aragorn: Fight for us... and regain your honor.
Gimli: They had no honor in life. They have none now in death.
Denethor: No tomb for Denethor and Faramir. No long, slow sleep of death embalmed. We shall burn, like the heathen kings of old. Bring wood and oil.
Saruman: You have fought many wars and slain many men, Theoden King, and made peace afterwards. Can we not take council as we once did, my old friend? Can we not have peace?
Theoden: We shall have peace... We shall have peace, when you answer for the burning of the Westfold, and the children that lie dead there! We shall have peace, when the lives of the soldiers whose bodies were hewn even as they dead against the gates of the Hornberg, are avenged! When you hang from a gibbit for the sport of your own crows...! We shall have peace.
Saruman: Gibbits and crows! DOTARD! What do *you* want, Gandalf Greyhame? Let me guess. The key of Orthanc? Or perhaps the keys of Barad-Dur itself? Along with the crowns of the seven kings and the rods of the five wizards?
Sam: It must be getting near tea-time, leastways in decent places where there *is* still tea-time.
Gollum: We're not *in* decent places.
Gandalf: [
to Pippin] Now, listen carefully. Lord Denethor is Boromir's father. To give him news of his beloved son's death would be most unwise. And do not mention Frodo, or the Ring. And say nothing of Aragorn either. In fact, it's better if you don't speak at all, Peregrin Took.
Denethor: Can you sing, Master Hobbit?
Pippin: Well... yes. At least, well enough for my own people. But we have no songs for great halls and... evil times.
Denethor: And why should your songs be unfit for my hall? Come, sing me a song.
[
pause]
Pippin: [
sings] Home is behind, the world ahead... And there are many paths to tread. Through shadow, to the edge of night, until the stars are all alight... Mist and shadow, cloud and shade, all shall fade... all... shall... fade...
Aragorn: Hold your ground, hold your ground! Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of woes and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you *stand, Men of the West!*
Gandalf: Go back to the abyss! Fall into nothingness that awaits you and your master!
Witch King: Do you not know death when you see it, old man? This is my hour!
Smeagol: Clever Hobbits, to climb so high!
[
jumps on them, pins Frodo to the ground and grips him by the throat]
Smeagol: Mustn't go that way! Mustn't hurt the Precious!
Frodo: You swore! You swore on the Precious!
Smeagol: [
mocking] Oo-hoo-hoo-hoo...
Frodo: SMEAGOL PROMISED!
Smeagol: Smeagol lied.
Sam: [
Frodo stops walking] Mr. Frodo? What is it?
Frodo: Just a thought... I don't think I'm going to be returning.
Sam: Of course you are. That's just morbid thinking, that is.
Aragorn: Behold! The sword of Elendil!
Elrond: You're outnumbered, Aragorn. You need more men.
Aragorn: There are none.
Elrond: There are those who dwell in the mountain.
Aragorn: Murderers. Traitors. You would call upon them to fight? They believe in nothing. They answer to no one.
Elrond: They will answer to the king of Gondor.
[
pulls out Anduril]
Elrond: Anduril, Flame of the West, forged from the shards of Narsil.
Aragorn: Sauron will not have forgotten the sword of Elendil. The blade that was broken shall return to Minas Tirith.
Elrond: The man who can wield the power of this sword can summon to him an army more deadly than any that walks this earth. Put aside the ranger. Become who you were born to be. Take the Dimholt Road.
[
pause]
Aragorn: [
in Elvish] I give hope to men. I keep none for myself.
Aragorn: [
to the corsair ships] You may go no further! You will not enter Gondor.
Captain: Who are you to deny us passage?
Aragorn: Legolas, fire a warning shot past the bosun's ear.
Gimli: Mind your aim!
[
Legolas aims; Gimli knocks the bow as he shoots and the arrow kills the bosun]
Gimli: Oh! That's it, right! We warned you! Prepare to be boarded!
[
the corsairs laugh]
Captain: Boarded! By you and whose army?
Aragorn: *This* army.
[
the army of the dead charges through him and onto the ships]
Eowyn: Courage, Merry, courage for our friends.
Smeagol: ...and take it for ME.
Gollum: For us.
Smeagol: Yes, we... we meant for us.
Denethor: Is there a captain here who still has the courage to do his lord's will?
Faramir: You wish now that our places had been exchanged... that I had died and Boromir had lived.
Denethor: Yes.
[
whispering]
Denethor: I wish that.
Faramir: Since you are robbed of Boromir... I will do what I can in his stead.
[
Bows and turns to leave]
Faramir: If I should return, think better of me, Father.
Denethor: That will depend on the manner of your return.
Galadriel: The power of the Three Rings is ended. The time has come... for the dominion of Men.
Elrond: I Aear c?n ven na mar.
[
Elvish: The Sea calls us home]
Bilbo: I think I'm... quite ready for another adventure.
[
Climbs on board with Elrond. Galadriel gets on boat with Celeborn]
Gandalf: Farewell... my brave Hobbits. My work is now finished. Here at last, on the shores of the sea... comes the end of our Fellowship. I will not say, Do not weep... not all tears are an evil.
[
Heads to the ship, then turns around, waiting]
Gandalf: It is time, Frodo.
Sam: What does he mean?
Frodo: We set out to save the Shire, Sam. And it has been saved. But not for me.
Sam: You don't mean that. You can't leave.
Theoden: I have left instruction. The people are to follow your rule in my stead. Take up my seat in the Golden Hall. Long may you defend Edoras if the battle goes ill.
Eowyn: What other duty would you have me do?
Theoden: Duty? No... I would have you smile again, not grieve for those whose time has come. You shall live to see these days renewed. No more despair.
Gamling: He leaves because there is no hope.
Theoden: He leaves because he must.
Gamling: Too few have come. We cannot defeat the armies of Mordor.
Theoden: No. We cannot. But we will meet them in battle nonetheless.
Eowyn: I will kill you if you touch him!
Witch King: Do not come between the Nazgul and his prey.
Sam: [
to Shelob] Let him go, you filth. Let him go! You will not touch him again!
Pippin: Is there any hope, Gandalf, for Frodo and Sam?
Gandalf: There never was much hope. Just a fool's hope.
Gollum: Wake up. Wake up. Wake up, sleepies. We must go, yeeees, we must go at once.
Sam: Haven't you had any sleep, Mr. Frodo?
[
Frodo shakes his head]
Sam: I've gone and had too much... it must be getting late.
Frodo: No, it's not. It's not midday, yet. The days are growing darker.
Gollum: We must go.
Sam: Not until Mr. Frodo has had something to eat.
Gollum: No time to lose, silly.
Sam: [
Gives Frodo lembas bread] Here, eat this.
Frodo: What about you?
Sam: I'm not hungry. Leastways, not for lembas bread.
Frodo: Sam...
Sam: Alright... we don't have that much left. You go ahead and eat that, Mr. Frodo. I've rationed it... there should be enough left.
Frodo: For what?
Sam: The journey home.
Sam: Give me your hand. Take my hand. Don't you let go. Don't let go... *Reach!*
Sam: You miserable little maggot. I'll stove your head in!
Frodo: I need you on my side.
Sam: I'm on your side Mr Frodo.
Frodo: I know you are Sam.
Theoden: I know your face... Eowyn. My eyes darken.
Eowyn: No. No. I'm going to save you.
Theoden: You already did... Eowyn. My body is broken. You have to let me go. I go to my fathers, in whose mighty company I shall not now feel ashamed. Eowyn...
[
dies]
Sam: I heard it from his own mouth! He means to murder us!
Gollum: Never! Smeagol wouldn't hurt a fly!
Witch King: [
taking Eowyn by the throat] You fool. No man can kill me. Die now.
[
Merry stabs the Witch King from behind; the Witch King shrieks and falls to his knees. Eowyn rises and pulls off her helm, her hair falls down over her shoulder]
Eowyn: I am no man.
[
she thrusts her sword into the Witch King's helm and twists; he shrieks and implodes]
[
as he kills the three Orcs guarding Frodo]
Sam: That's for Frodo! And for the Shire! *And that's for my old Gaffer!*
Theoden: Eomer. Take your Èored down the left flank. Gamling, follow the King's banner down the center. Grimbold, take your company right, after you pass the wall. Forth, and fear no darkness! Arise! Arise, Riders of Theoden! Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered! A sword day... a red day... ere the sun rises!
Eowyn: [
to Merry] What ever happens, stay with me. I'll look after you.
[
the King rides past his men, hitting their spears with his sword as he goes]
Theoden: Ride now!... Ride now!... Ride! Ride to ruin and the world's ending!
[
He stops and faces Sauron's army]
Theoden: Death!
Rohirrim: [
echoing] Death!
Theoden: Death!
Rohirrim: [
echoing] Death!
Theoden: DEATH!
Eowyn, Merry: Death!
Theoden: Forth, Eorlingas!
Pippin: [
kneeling] I offer you my service, such as it is, in payment of this debt.
Denethor: This is my first command to you. How did you escape, and my son did not, so mighty a man as he was?
Pippin: The mightiest man may be slain by one arrow... and Boromir was pierced by many.
Gandalf: Get up. My Lord, there will be a time to greive for Boromir, but it is not now. War is coming. The enemy is on your doorstep. As steward, you are charged with the defense of this city. Where are Gondor's armies? You still have friends. You are not alone in this fight. Send word of Theoden of Rohan. Light the Beacons.
Gandalf: Frodo has passed beyond my sight. The darkness is deepening.
Aragorn: If Sauron had the Ring, we would know it.
Gandalf: It's only a matter of time.
Witch King: Send forth all legions. Do not stop the attack until the city is taken. Slay them all.
Gothmog: What of the wizard?
Witch King: I will break him.
Eomer: Now is the hour! Riders of Rohan! Oaths you have taken, now fulfill them all, to lord and land!
[
From Trailer]
Gandalf: The board is set... the pieces are moving
[
From Trailer]
Elrond: You gave away your life's grace. I cannot protect you anymore.
Legolas: The stars are veiled. Something stirs in the East. A sleepless malice. The eye of the enemy is moving. He is HERE.
[
after Legolas single-handedly takes out an Oliphant and its drivers]
Gimli: That still only counts as one.
Gimli: Never thought I'd die fighting side by side with an Elf.
Legolas: What about side by side with a friend?
Gimli: Aye. I could do that.
Gimli: Certainty of death. Small chance of success. What are we waiting for?
Frodo: [
after destroying the Ring] I can see the Shire. The Brandywine River. Bag End. The Lights in the Party Tree.
Sam: Rosie Cotton dancing. She had ribbons in her hair. If ever I were to marry someone, it would have been her. It would have been her.
[
sits down and begins to cry]
Frodo: [
leans over and hugs him] I'm glad to be with you, Samwise Gamgee, here at the end of all things.
Eomer: You should not encourage him.
Eowyn: You should not doubt him.
Eomer: I do not doubt his heart, only the reach of his arm.
Eowyn: Why are you doing this? The war lies to the East. You cannot leave on the eve of battle.
[
pause]
Eowyn: You cannot abandon the men.
Aragorn: Eowyn...
Eowyn: We need you here.
Aragorn: Why have you come?
Eowyn: Do you not know?
Aragorn: It is but a shadow and a thought that you love. I cannot give you what you seek.
[
Merry gives Pippin a tobacco pouch at their parting]
Pippin: The last of the Longbottom leaf?
Merry: I know you've run out. You smoke too much, Pip.
Gandalf: I will not say, Do not weep, for not all tears are an evil.
Aragorn: [
to Frodo, Sam, Pippin, and Merry] My friends. You bow to no-one.
[
He kneels, and the entire kingdom follows suit, kneeling to the hobbits]
Frodo: [
voiceover] And thus it was. A fourth age of middle-earth began. And the fellowship of the ring... though eternally bound by friendship and love... was ended. Thirteen months to the day since Gandalf sent us on our long journey... we found ourselves looking upon a familiar sight. We were home. How do you pick up the threads of an old life? How do you go on... when in your heart you begin to understand... there is no going back? There are somethings that time cannot mend... some hurts that go too deep... that have taken hold. Bilbo once told me his part in this tale would end... that each of us must come and go in the telling. Bilbo's story was now over. There would be no more journeys for him... save one. My dear Sam. You cannot always be torn in two. You will have to be one and whole for many years. You have so much to enjoy and to be and to do. Your part in the story will go on.
Pippin: I didn't think it would end this way.
Gandalf: End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path... One that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass... And then you see it.
Pippin: What? Gandalf?... See what?
Gandalf: White shores... and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.
Pippin: [
smiling] Well, that isn't so bad.
Gandalf: [
softly] No... No it isn't.
Frodo: The Ring is mine.
Gandalf: Authority is not given to you to deny the return of the king, *steward*.
Denethor: The rule of Gondor is mine! And no other's!
Theoden: I take my leave.
Aragorn: My lord Elrond.
Elrond: I come on behalf of one whom I love. Arwen is dying. She will not long survive the evil that now spreads from Mordor. The light of the Evenstar is failing. As Sauron's power grows, her strength wanes. Arwen's life is now tied to the fate of the Ring. The Shadow is upon us, Aragorn. The end has come.
Aragorn: It will not be our end but his.
Aragorn: The Beacons of Minas Tirith! The Beacons are lit! Gondor calls for aid.
Theoden: And Rohan will answer. Muster the Rohirrim. Assemble the army at Dunharrow. As many men as can be found. You have two days. On the third, we ride for Gondor... and war.
Pippin: It's so quiet.
Gandalf: It's the deep breath before the plunge.
Pippin: I don't want to be in a battle. But waiting on the edge of one I can't escape is even worse.
Frodo: We set out to save the Shire, Sam and it has been saved - but not for me.
Legolas: The horses are restless, and the men are quiet.
Legolas: The way is shut. It was made by those who are dead, and the dead keep it. The way is shut.
Gimli: Well, this is a thing unheard of. An Elf would go underground, where a Dwarf dare not. Oh, I'd never hear the end of it.
Sam: What are you up to? Sneaking off, are we?
Gollum: Sneaking? Sneaking? Fat hobbit is always so polite. Smeagol shows them secret ways that nobody else could find, and they say "sneak!" Sneak? Very nice friend. Oh, yes, my precious. Very nice, very nice.
Sam: All right, all right! You just startled me is all. What were you doing?
Gollum: Sneaking.
[
last lines]
Sam: Well, I'm back.
Pippin: I feel like I'm back at the Green Dragon.
Merry: [
through a mouthful of food] Mm. Green Dragon.
Pippin: A mug of ale in my hand, putting my feet up on a settle after a hard day's work.
Merry: Only, you've never done a hard day's work.
[
They laugh; Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli ride up. Merry stands and gives an exaggerated bow]
Merry: Welcome, my lords, to Isengard!
Gimli: You young rascals! A merry hunt you've led us on, and now we find you... feasting and... and *smoking.*
Pippin: We are sitting on a field of victory enjoying a few well-earned comforts.
[
Merry blows a smoke ring]
Pippin: The salted pork is particularly good.
Gimli: [
eagerly] Salted pork?
Gandalf: [
exasperated] Hobbits.
Merry: We're under orders from Treebeard, who has taken over management of Isengard.
Treebeard: [
as they walk toward the tower] Hroom, young master Gandalf! I'm relieved that you've come. Wood and water, stock and stone I can master, but there's a wizard to manage here. Locked his tower.
Arwen: Tell me what you have seen.
Elrond: Arwen?
Arwen: You have the gift of foresight. What did you see?
Elrond: I looked into your future and I saw death.
Arwen: But there is also life. You *saw* there was a child, you saw my son!
Elrond: That future is almost gone.
Arwen: But it is not lost.
Elrond: Nothing is certain.
Arwen: Some things are certain. If I leave him now, I will regret it forever.
Pippin: [
singing to Denethor as Faramir leads the charge] Home is behind, the world ahead... and there are many paths to tread... Through shadow... To the edge of night... Until the stars are all alight... Mist and shadow, cloud and shade... All shall fade... all... shall... fade.
Denethor: My sons are spent. My line has ended. Rohan has deserted us. Theoden's betrayed me. Abandon your posts! Flee, flee for your lives!
[
He turns around, and Gandalf knocks him out with his staff]
Gandalf: Prepare for battle!
Gandalf: Faramir!
[
Running after Faramir]
Gandalf: Faramir! Your father's will has turned to madness. Do not throw away your life so rashly.
Faramir: Where does my allegiance lie if not here? This is the city of the men of Numenor. I would gladly give my life to defend her beauty, her memory... her wisdom...
Gandalf: Your father loves you, Faramir. He will remember it before the end.
Gollum: She's always hungry. She always needs to feed. She must eat. All she gets is nasty orcses.
Smeagol: And they doesn't taste very nice, does they, Precious?
Gollum: No. Not very nice at all, my love.
[
Frodo drinks the last drops of water from Sam's waterskin]
Frodo: There'll be none left for the return journey.
Sam: I don't think there will be a return journey, Mr. Frodo.
Pippin: How far is Minas Tirith?
Gandalf: Three days' ride, as the Nazgul flies, and you'd better hope we don't have one of those on our tail.
Merry: Are you going to leave me?
Pippin: No, Merry. I'm going to look after you.
Merry: Why did you look? Why do you always have to look?
Pippin: I don't know. I can't help it.
Merry: You never can.
Pippin: I'm sorry, all right? I won't do it again.
Merry: Don't you understand? The enemy thinks you have the Ring. He's going to be looking for you Pip. They have to get you out of here.
Pippin: And you... you're coming with me?
[
Merry impatiently walks away]
Pippin: Merry?
Merry: Come on.
Pippin: But we'll see each other soon. Won't we?
Merry: I don't know. I don't know what is going to happen.
Pippin: Merry...
Gandalf: Run, Shadowfax. Show us the meaning of haste.
Pippin: Merry!
[
Shadowfax gallops off, carrying Gandalf and Pippin away]
Gandalf: Of all the inquisitive Hobbits, Peregrin Took, you are the worst.
Frodo: [
hands Sam the book] The last pages are for you, Sam.
Denethor: You think you are wise, Mithrandir. Yet for all your subtleties, you have not wisdom. Do you think the eyes of the White Tower are blind? I have seen more than you know. With your left hand you would use me as a shield against Mordor, and with your right you would seek to supplant me. I know who rides with Theoden of Rohan. Oh, yes. Word has reached my ears of this Aragorn, son of Arathorn, and I tell you now, I will not bow to this Ranger from the North, last of a ragged house long bereft of lordship!
Gothmog: The Age of Men is over. The Time of the Orc has come.
Pippin: Here do I swear fealty and service to Gondor. In peace or war. In living or dying. F... f... from this hour henceforth, until my lord release me... or death take me.
Denethor: And I shall not forget it. Nor fail to reward that which is given. Fealty with love, valor with honor, disloyalty with vengeance.
King of the Dead: The dead do not suffer the living to pass.
Aragorn: You will suffer me.
Frodo: My dear Sam. You cannot always be torn in two. You will have to be one and whole for many years. You have so much to enjoy and to be and to do. Your part in the story will go on.
Elrond: Your hands are cold. The life of the Eldar is leaving you.
Arwen: This was my choice... ada, whether by your will or not, there is no ship now that can bear me hence.
Smeagol: Give us that, Deagol my love.
Deagol: Why?
Smeagol: Because it's my birthday, and I wants it.
Gimli: There's plenty for the both of us, may the best dwarf win.
[
to Smeagol, outside Shelob's lair]
Frodo: I have to destroy it, Smeagol. I have to destroy it for both our sakes.
Galadriel: This task was appointed to you, Frodo of the Shire. If you do not find a way, no one will.
[
Gollum and Frodo stand in front of a tunnel opening, and Frodo hesitates to go in]
Gollum: It's the only way. Go in, or go back.
Frodo: I cannot go back.
Arwen: From the ashes, a fire shall be woken. A light from the shadow shall spring. Renewed shall be blade that was broken. The crownless again shall be king.
Frodo: You can't help me anymore.
Sam: You don't mean that.
Frodo: Go home.
[
singing]
Merry, Pippin: You can search far and wide. You can drink the whole town dry. But you'll never find a beer so brown as the one we drink in our hometown. You can drink your fancy ales. You can drink them by the flagon. But the only brew for the brave and tru-u-u-ue comes from the Green Dragon!
Pippin: [
pulls sword from scabbard] So I imagine this is just a... ceremonial possession? I mean, they don't actually expect me to do any fighting... Do they?
Gandalf: You're in the service of the steward now. You'll have to do as you're told, Peregrin Took.
[
shakes his head]
Gandalf: Guard of the Citadel.
Gandalf: This will be the end of Gondor as we know it. Here the hammer-stroke will fall hardest.
[
Gorbag advances towards Frodo with a knife]
Gorbag: I'm gonna bleed you like a stuck pig.
[
Gorbag is stabbed from behind by Sam]
Sam: Not if I stick you first.
[
Aragorn dreams of a pale, dying Arwen]
Arwen: I wish I could have seen him again, one last time.
[
Aragorn is crowned King]
Aragorn: This day does not belong to one man but to all. Let us together rebuild this world that we may share in the days of peace.
Bilbo: Tell me again, lad... where are we going?
Frodo: To the harbor, Bilbo. The elves have accorded you a special honor; a place on the last ship to leave Middle Earth.
Bilbo: Frodo... Any chance of seeing that old ring again? Hmm? The one I gave you?
Frodo: I'm sorry, uncle... I'm afraid I lost it.
Bilbo: Oh... Pity. Should have liked to have held it one last time.
[
Aragorn readies to take the Paths of the Dead. He leads his horse towards the entrance and passes by Gimli, who stops him]
Gimli: Where do you think you're going?
Aragorn: Not this time Gimli. This time you must stay.
[
Legolas walks up to them, leading his horse]
Legolas: Have you learned nothing of the stubbornness of dwarves?
Gimli: You may as well accept it. We're going with you, laddy.
Shagrat: This scum will be awake in a couple of hours.
Gorbag: And then he'll wish he'd never been born.
Witch King: Feast on his flesh.
Gandalf: If the beacons of Gondor are lit, Rohan must be ready for war.
Theoden: Tell me, why should we ride to the aid of those who did not come to ours? What do we owe Gondor?
Aragorn: I will go.
Gandalf: No.
Aragorn: They must be warned.
Gandalf: They will be.
Gandalf: I ride for Minas Tirith...
[
looks at Pippin]
Gandalf: ...and I won't be going alone.
Gondorian Soldier 1: The beacon! The beacon of Amon Din is lit.
Gandalf: Hope is kindled.
Gandalf: Now come the days of the king!
[
whispers]
Gandalf: May they be blessed.
Eowyn: Ride with me.
Merry: My lady?
Eowyn: He has just as much reason to go to war as you do. Why can he not fight for those he loves?
Pippin: But we have the white wizard. That's got to count for something.
Gandalf: So it begins, the great battle of our time.
Theoden: Tonight we remember those who gave their blood to defend this country. Hail the victorious dead.
All: Hail!
Sam: It's that Gollum, it's this place, it's that thing around your neck. I could help a bit, I could carry it, share the load...
Frodo: GET AWAY!
Sam: I don't want to keep it. I just want to help.
[
Eowyn hands Aragorn a goblet, he drinks and moves away]
Theoden: [
to Eowyn] I am happy for you. He is an honorable man.
Eowyn: You are both honorable men.
Theoden: It was not Theoden of Rohan who led our people to victory.
Galadriel: And for you, Frodo Baggins, I give you the light of Earendil our most beloved star. May it be a light to you in dark places when all other lights go out.
Frodo: Aiya Earendil Elenion Ancalima
Gollum: They cursed us. Murderer they called us. They cursed us, and drove us away. And we wept, Precious, we wept to be so alone. And we only wish to catch fish so juicy sweet. And we forgot the taste of bread... the sound of trees... the softness of the wind. We even forgot our own name. My Precious.
Gandalf: So passes Denethor, son of Ecthelion.
Gandalf: Hail Denethor, son of Ecthelion, Lord and Steward of Gondor.
Gandalf: Not at the towers! Aim for the trolls! Kill the trolls! Bring them down!
Gandalf: Send these foul beasts into the abyss.
Gothmog: [
sniffs] Fear. The city is rank with it. Let us ease their suffering.
Gollum: [
singing] Pretty little fly. Why does he cry? Caught in a web. Soon he'll be... eaten.
[
Aragorn is looking toward the paths of the dead, when Gimli interrupts]
Gimli: Aragorn, let's find some food.
Denethor: He is burning... already burning.
Pippin: He's not dead! He's not dead!
[
Denethor drags him out]
Pippin: No! No! He's not dead! Stop!
Denethor: Farewell, Peregrin, son of Paladin... I release you from my service. Go now and die in what way seems best to you.
Gandalf: Fight! Fight to the last man! Fight for your lives!
Frodo: What is this place?
Gollum: Master must go inside the tunnel.
Frodo: Now that I'm here, I don't think I want to.
Sam: I'm sorry to wake you, Mr. Frodo. We have to be moving on.
[
Slowly Frodo gets up, his voice sounding wearied]
Frodo: It's dark still...
Sam: It's always dark here.
Gandalf: [
During the siege of Gondor] Peregrin Took! Go back to the Citadel!
Pippin: [
dazed] They called us out to fight.
Gandalf: This is no place for a Hobbit!
[
He lays about him with his sword and staff; an orc rushes up behind him and Pippin kills it. Gandalf looks at Pippin]
Gandalf: [
impressed] Guard of the Citadel indeed!
[
Gandalf is fighting and sees a moth. He looks up to see... ]
Pippin: Eagles! The eagles are coming!
Sam: You can't go walking through Mordor in naught but your skin.
Gothmog: Release the prisoners!
Orc Lieutenant 1: Catapults!
[
the catapults fling dozens of severed heads into the city]
Sam: [
about Gollum] You don't see it, do you? He's a villain.
Pippin: It's the tree. Gandalf! Gandalf!
Gandalf: Yes the white tree of Gondor. The tree of the King. Lord Denethor, however, is not the king. He is a steward only, a caretaker of the throne.
Gandalf: Peregrin Took, there is a task now to be done. Another opportunity for one of the Shirefolk to prove their great worth. You must not fail me.
Faramir: Mithrandir! They broke through our defenses! They've taken the bridge and the west bank. Battalions of Orcs are crossing the river.
Irolas: It is as the Lord Denethor predicted. Long has he forseen this doom.
Gandalf: Forseen and done nothing!
Gandalf: Faramir? This is not the first halfing to have crossed your path.
Faramir: No.
Pippin: You've seen Frodo and Sam?
Gandalf: Where? When?
Faramir: In Ithilien. Not two days ago. Gandalf, they're taking the road to the Morgul Vale.
Gandalf: And then the pass of Cirith Ungol.
Pippin: What does that mean? What's wrong?
Gandalf: Faramir, tell me everything.
Theoden: Grimbold, how many?
Grimbold: I bring 500 from the Westfold, my lord.
Gamling: We have 300 more from Fenmarch, Theoden King.
Theoden: Where are the riders of Snowbourn?
Gamling: None have come, my lord.
Theoden: Six thousand spears. Less than half of what I'd hoped for.
Aragorn: Six thousand will not be enough to break the lines of Mordor.
Theoden: More will come.
Aragorn: Every hour lost hastens Gondor's defeat. We have till dawn, then we must ride.
Gimli: That road there... where does that lead?
Legolas: It is the road to the Dimholt, the door under the mountain.
Eomer: None who venture there ever return. That mountain is evil.
Elrond: You ride to war, but not to victory. Sauron's armies march on Minas Tirith, this you know. But in secret he sends another force which will attack from the river. A fleet of Corsairs ships sails from the south. They reach the city in two days.
Gimli: What kind of army would linger in such a place?
Legolas: One that is cursed. Long ago the men of the mountain swore an oath to the last king of Gondor, to come to his aid, to fight. But when the time came, when Gondor's need was dire, they fled, vanishing into the darkness of the mountain. And so Isildur cursed them, never to rest until they had fulfilled their pledge. Who shall call them from the gray twilight, the forgotten people?
Aragorn: What say you? What say you? I am Isildur's heir. Fight for me. And I will hold your oaths fulfilled. What say you?
Gandalf: Our enemy is ready, his full strength gathered. Not only orcs, but men as well: legions of Haradrim from the south, mercenaries from the coast. All will answer Mordor's call.
Gandalf: Hold them back! Do not give in to fear! Stand to your posts! FIGHT!
King of the Dead: Release us.
Gimli: Bad idea. Very handy in a tight spot, these lads, despite the fact they're dead.
Denethor: Why do the fools fly? Better to die sooner than late. For die we must.
Denethor: [
to Faramir, about his loyalty] Ever you desire to appear lordly and gracious as a king of old. Boromir would have remembered his father's need. He would have brought me a kingly gift.
Faramir: Boromir would not have brought the Ring. He would have stretched out his hand to this thing, and taking it, he would have fallen.
Denethor: You know nothing of this matter!
Faramir: He would have kept it for his own! And when he returned, you would not have known your son.
Denethor: [
jumping up angrily] Boromir was loyal to me! Not some wizard's pupil!
[
Denethor cries and falls back into his chair; Faramir approaches him]
Faramir: Father?
[
Denethor looks over Faramir's shoulder and smiles]
Denethor: My son!
[
an image of Boromir appears behind Faramir. Boromir smiles and then the image fades. Denethor is left looking at Faramir. His mood shifts back to anger]
Denethor: Leave me!
[
Faramir hesitates and departs]
Aragorn: I have wished you joy since first I saw you.
Gorbag: [
as he and Shagrat come upon Frodo's body] What's this? Looks like old Shelob has been having a bit of fun.
Shagrat: Killed another one, has she?
Gorbag: [
he examines Frodo's body] No... this fellow ain't dead.
Sam: [
to himself, in tears] Not dead!
Gorbag: She jabs them with her stinger and they go as limp as a boned fish. Then she has her way with them. That's how she likes to feed-fresh blood. Take him to the tower!
[
the Orcs begin to drag Frodo away]
Sam: Samwise, you fool!
Denethor: I am the servant of the house of Anarion. Thus I have walked... thus now I will asleep.
Sam: I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.
Theoden: A great host, you say?
Aragorn: All Isengard is emptied.
Theoden: How many?
Aragorn: Ten thousand strong at least.
Theoden: [
astonished] Ten thousand?
Aragorn: It is an army bred for a single purpose: to destroy the world of men. They will be here by nightfall.
Theoden: Let them come.
Legolas: [
in Elvish] You're late.
[
in English]
Legolas: You look terrible.
Gollum: [
to Sam] Stupid, fat hobbit.
Gimli: Oh come on, we can take 'em.
Aragorn: It's a long way.
Gimli: Toss me.
Aragorn: What?
Gimli: I cannot jump the distance, you'll have to toss me.
[
pauses, looks up at Aragorn]
Gimli: Don't tell the elf.
Aragorn: Not a word.
[
a wall of soldiers line the ramparts - the top of Gimli's helm barely peeks over the top]
Gimli: [
to Legolas] You could have picked a better spot.
Pippin: It's talking, Merry. The tree is talking.
Gandalf: The battle of Helm's Deep is over; the battle for Middle Earth is about to begin.
Gollum: We wants it, we needs it. Must have the precious. They stole it from us. Sneaky little hobbitses. Wicked, tricksy, false!
Smeagol: No. Not master!
Gollum: Yes, precious, false! They will cheat you, hurt you, LIE.
Smeagol: Master is our friend!
Gollum: You don't have any friends; nobody likes you!
Smeagol: I'm not listening... I'm not listening...
Gollum: You're a liar and a thief.
Smeagol: No!
Gollum: *Murderer*.
Smeagol: Go away!
Gollum: "Go away?"
[
Gollum laughs as Smeagol begins crying]
Smeagol: I hate you, I hate you.
Gollum: Where would you be without me, gollum, gollum? I saved us! It was me! We survived because of me!
Smeagol: [
stops crying] Not anymore.
Gollum: What did you say?
Smeagol: Master looks after us now. We don't need you anymore.
Gollum: What?
Smeagol: Leave now, and never come back!
Gollum: No!
Smeagol: Leave now, and never come back!
[
Gollum screams in frustration]
Smeagol: LEAVE! NOW! AND NEVER COME BACK!
[
Gollum is silent]
Smeagol: [
looks around] We told him to go away... and away he goes, Precious! Gone, gone, gone! Smeagol is free!
Gimli: [
Orcs begin their attack on Helm's Deep] Send them to me!
[
first lines]
Gandalf: You cannot pass!
Frodo: Gandalf!
Gandalf: I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. Go back to the shadow. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udun! You shall not pass!
Galadriel: The power of the enemy is growing. Sauron will use his puppet Saruman to destroy the people of Rohan. Isengard has been unleashed. The Eye of Sauron now turns to Gondor, the last free kingdom of men. His war on this country will come swiftly. He senses the Ring is close. The strength of the Ringbearer is failing. In his heart, Frodo begins to understand. The quest will claim his life. You know this. You have foreseen it. It is the risk we all took. In the gathering dark, the will of the Ring grows strong. It works hard now to find its way back into the hands of men. Men, who are so easily seduced by its power. The young captain of Gondor has but to extend his hand, take the Ring for his own and the world will fall. It is close now, so close to achieving its goal. For Sauron will have dominion over all life on this Earth, even unto the ending of the world. The time of the elves is over. Do we leave Middle-Earth to its fate? Do we let them stand alone?
Gandalf: The fate of the world will now be decided.
Theoden: So it begins.
Gandalf: Gandalf? Yes... that was what they used to call me. Gandalf the Gray. That was my name.
Gimli: Gandalf...
Gandalf: *I* am Gandalf the White. And I come back to you now - at the turn of the tide.
Legolas: A red sun rises, blood has been spilled this night.
Gollum: [
singing] The rock and pool, is nice and cool, so juicy sweet. Our only wish,
[
he whacks the fish on the rock]
Gollum: to catch a fish,
[
another whack]
Gollum: so juicy sweet.
Merry: I think we might have made a mistake leaving the Shire, Pippin.
Saruman: If the wall is breached, Helm's Deep will fall.
Wormtongue: Even if it is breached, it will take a number beyond reckoning, thousands, to storm the keep.
Saruman: Tens of thousands.
Wormtongue: But, my lord, there is no such force.
[
they go out onto the balcony, and see an army of ten thousand Uruk-hai]
Eomer: What business does an elf, man, and a dwarf have in the Ridder-Mark? Speak quickly.
Gimli: Give me your name, horse-master, and I shall give you mine.
Eomer: [
dismounts] I would cut off your head, dwarf, if it stood but a little higher from the ground.
Legolas: [
draws his bow and aims at arrow at Eomer's throat] You would die before your stroke fell.
Frodo: I can't do this, Sam.
Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?
Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.
Gollum: We be nice to them, if they be nice to us.
[
last lines]
Frodo: Smeagol?
Sam: We're not going to wait for you. Come on.
Smeagol: Master. Master looks after us. Master wouldn't hurt us.
Gollum: Master broke his promise.
Smeagol: Don't ask Smeagol. Poor, poor Smeagol.
Gollum: Master betrayed us. Wicked. Tricksy, False. We ought to wring his filthy little neck. Kill him! Kill him! Kill them both! And then we take the precious... and we be the master!
Smeagol: But the fat Hobbit, he knows. Eyes always watching.
Gollum: Then we stabs them out. Put out his eyeses, make him crawl.
Smeagol: Yes. Yes. Yes.
Gollum: Kill them both.
Smeagol: Yes. No! No! It's too risky. It's too risky.
Sam: Where is he? Where has he gone? Hey, Gollum! Where are you?
Frodo: Smeagol?
Gollum: We could let *her* do it.
Smeagol: Yes. She could do it.
Gollum: Yes, precious, she could. And then we takes it once they're dead.
Smeagol: Once they're dead. Shh.
[
Comes out of hiding]
Smeagol: Come on Hobbits. Long ways to go yet. Smeagol will show the way.
Gollum: Follow me.
Sam: What we need is a few good taters.
Gollum: What's taters, precious? What's taters, eh?
Sam: *Po-tay-toes!* Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew... Lovely big golden chips with a nice piece of fried fish.
[
Gollum makes a noise of disgust while sticking his tongue out]
Sam: Even you couldn't say no to that.
Gollum: Oh yes we could. Spoilin' nice fish. Give it to us raw and w-r-r-riggling; you keep nasty chips.
Sam: You're hopeless.
Aragorn: Not idly do the leaves of Lorien fall.
Legolas: They may yet be alive.
Sam: There are dead things! Dead faces in the water.
Gollum: All dead... all rotten. Elves and men and orcses. A great battle, long ago. The Dead Marshes... yes, that is their name.
Gollum: So bright... so beautiful... ah, Precious.
Frodo: What did you say?
Gollum: Master should be resting, Master needs to keep up his strength.
Frodo: [
standing up] Who are you?
Gollum: Mustn't ask us, not it's business. Gollum, gollum.
Frodo: Gandalf told me you were one of the River-folk.
Gollum: Cold be heart and hand and bone. Cold be travelers far from home.
Frodo: [
next to Gollum] He said your life was a sad story.
Gollum: They do not see what lies ahead, when Sun has faded and Moon is dead.
Frodo: [
in front of Gollum] You were not so very different from a Hobbit once, were you?
[
Gollum looks up at him]
Frodo: Smeagol.
Gollum: What did you call me?
Frodo: That was your name once, wasn't it?
Gollum: My name? My name... Smeagol.
Gollum: He wants the precious. Always he is looking for it. And the precious is wanting to go back to him... But we mustn't let him have it.
Gandalf: All our hopes now lie with two little hobbits, somewhere in the wilderness.
Sam: Hey, Stinker! Don't go getting too far ahead.
Frodo: Why do you do that?
Sam: What?
Frodo: Call him names, run him down all the time.
Sam: Because... because that's what he is, Mr. Frodo. There's naught left in him but lies and deceit. It's the ring he wants; it's all he cares about.
Frodo: You have no idea what it did to him... what it's still doing to him. I want to help him, Sam.
Sam: Why?
Frodo: Because I have to believe he can come back.
Sam: You can't save him, Mr. Frodo.
Frodo: [
snaps] What do you know about it? Nothing!... I'm sorry, Sam. I don't know why I said that.
Sam: I do. It's the ring. You can't take your eyes off it; I've seen you. You're not eating. You barely sleep. It's taken ahold of you, Mr. Frodo. You have to fight it.
Frodo: I know what I have to do, Sam. The ring was entrusted to *me*. It's my task, mine, my own!
[
storms off]
Sam: Can't you hear yourself? Don't you know who you sound like?
[
following Gollum down the path]
Sam: I wonder if we'll ever be put into songs or tales.
Frodo: [
turns around] What?
Sam: I wonder if people will ever say, 'Let's hear about Frodo and the Ring.' And they'll say 'Yes, that's one of my favorite stories. Frodo was really courageous, wasn't he, Dad?' 'Yes, my boy, the most famousest of hobbits. And that's saying a lot.'
Frodo: [
continue walking] You've left out one of the chief characters - Samwise the Brave. I want to hear more about Sam.
[
stops and turns to Sam]
Frodo: Frodo wouldn't have got far without Sam.
Sam: Now Mr. Frodo, you shouldn't make fun; I was being serious.
Frodo: So was I.
[
they continue to walk]
Sam: Samwise the Brave...
Aragorn: Farmers, ferriers, stable boys. These are no soldiers.
Gimli: Most have seen too many winters.
Legolas: Or too few.
Gimli: My lady...
Eowyn: Lord Aragorn... where is he?
Gimli: He fell.
Arwen: Go to sleep.
Aragorn: I am asleep. This is a dream.
Arwen: Then it is a good dream.
Gandalf: The veiling shadow that glowers in the East takes shape. Sauron will suffer no rival. From the summit of Barad-dur his eye watches ceaselessly. But he is not so mighty yet that he is above fear. Doubt ever gnaws at him. The rumor has reached him. The heir of Numenor still lives. Sauron fears you, Aragorn. He fears what you may become. And so he will strike hard and fast at the world of Men. He will use his puppet Saruman to destroy Rohan. War is coming. Rohan must defend itself, and therein lies our first challenge, for Rohan is weak and ready to fall. The King's mind is enslaved; it's an old device of Saruman's. His hold over King Theoden is now very strong. Sauron and Saruman are tightening the noose. But, for all their cunning, we have one advantage. The Ring remains hidden. And that we should seek to destroy it has not yet entered their darkest dreams. And so the weapon of the Enemy is moving towards Mordor in the hands of a Hobbit. Each day brings it closer to the fires of Mount Doom. We must trust now in Frodo. Everything depends now upon speed and upon the secrecy of his quest. Do not regret your decision to leave him. Frodo must finish this task alone.
Aragorn: He's not alone. Sam went with him.
Gandalf: Did he? Did he indeed? Good. Yes, very good.
Theoden: When last I looked, Théoden, not Aragorn, was king of Rohan.
Gollum: But, the fat hobbit. He knows. Eyes always watching.
Gandalf: Look to my coming on the first light of the fifth day, at dawn look to the east.
Aragorn: [
In Elvish] Show them no mercy... for you shall receive none!
Gimli: It's true you don't see many dwarf women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for dwarf men.
Aragorn: [
whispering] It's the beards.
Gimli: And this in turn has given rise to the belief that there are no dwarf women, and that dwarves just spring out of holes in the ground!
[
Eowyn laughs]
Gimli: Which is, of course, ridiculous.
Theoden: I will not risk open war.
Aragorn: Open war is upon you whether you would risk it or not.
Sam: Who are they?
Gollum: Wicked men. Servants of Sauron. They are called to Mordor. The Dark One is gathering all armies to him. It won't be long now. He will soon be ready.
Sam: Ready to do what?
Gollum: To make his war. The last war that will cover all the world in shadow.
Frodo: There is no promise you can make that I can trust.
Theoden: So much death. What can men do against such reckless hate?
Aragorn: Ride out with me. Ride out and meet them.
Theoden: For death and glory.
Aragorn: For Rohan. For your people.
Theoden: The Horn of Helm Hammerhand will sound in the deep, one last time!
Gandalf: The courtesy of your hall is somewhat lessened of late Théoden, King.
Gandalf: [
to Grima] Be silent. Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I did not pass through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm.
Saruman: Together, my lord Sauron, we shall rule this Middle-earth. The old world will burn in the fires of industry. Forests will fall. A new order will rise. We will drive the machine of war with the sword and the spear and the iron fist of the orc.
Merry: [
to the suggestion of returning home] The fires of Isengard will spread, and the forests of Tuckborough and Buckland will burn. And all that was once great and good in this world will be gone. There won't *be* a Shire, Pippin.
Gimli: Bring your pretty face to my axe.
Ugluk: Looks like meat's back on the menu, boys.
Theoden: Crops can be re-sown, homes re-built. Within these walls... we will outlast them.
Aragorn: They do not come to destroy Rohan's crops or villages. They come to destroy its people. Down to the last child.
Theoden: What will you have me do? Look at my men. Their courage hangs by a thread.
Theoden: Where is the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing? They have passed like rain on the mountain, like wind in the meadow. The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow. How did it come to this?
Gandalf: Three hundred lives of men I have walked this earth and now I have no time.
Gollum: We swears to serve the master of the precious. We will swear on... on... the precious!
Theoden: Why should I welcome you, Gandalf Stormcrow?
Wormtongue: A just question, my liege. Late is the hour in which this conjurer chooses to appear. "Lathspell" I name him. Ill news is an ill guest.
Gollum: Don't follow the lights.
Galadriel: The time of the Elves is over. Do we leave Middle-earth to its fate? Do we let them stand alone?
Haldir: I bring word from Lord Elrond of Rivendell. An Alliance once existed between Elves and Men. Long ago we fought and died together. We come to honor that allegiance.
Aragorn: Mae govannen, Haldir. You are most welcome.
Haldir: We are proud to fight alongside Men once more.
Gollum: He is drawing all evil to him.
Faramir: The enemy? His sense of duty was no less than yours, I deem. You wonder what his name is, where he comes from, and if he really was evil at heart. What lies or threats led him on this long march from home, and would he not rather have stayed there... in peace? War will make corpses of us all.
Aragorn: You have some skill with a blade.
Eowyn: The women of this country learned long ago, those without swords can still die upon them. I fear neither death nor pain.
Aragorn: What do you fear, my lady?
Eowyn: A cage. To stay behind bars until use and old age accept them and all chance of valor has gone beyond recall or desire.
Aragorn: You are a daughter of kings, a shield maiden of Rohan. I do not think that will be your fate.
Treebeard: [
after seeing the torn-down forest around Isengard] Saruman! A wizard should know better!
[
loud yell]
Treebeard: There is no curse in Elvish, Entish, or the tongues of men for this treachery.
Pippin: Look, the trees! They're moving!
Merry: Where are they going?
Treebeard: They have business with the Orcs. My business is with Isengard tonight, with rock and stone.
[
Ents emerge from the woods, following Treebeard]
Treebeard: Hroom, hm, come, my friends. The Ents are going to war. It is likely that we go to our doom. The last march of the Ents.
Faramir: I think at last we understand one another, Frodo Baggins.
Madril: You know the laws of our country - the laws of your father. If you let them go your life will be forfeit.
Faramir: Then it is forfeit. Release them.
Gandalf: There is no way out of that ravine, Théoden is walking into a trap.
Gollum: Sméagol... Why does he cry, Sméagol?
Smeagol: Cruel men hurts us. Master tricksed us.
Gollum: Of course he did. I told you he was tricksy. I told you he was false.
Smeagol: Master is our friend... our friend.
Gollum: Master betrayed us.
Smeagol: No, not it's business. Leave us alone.
Gollum: Filthy little hobbites. They stole it from us.
Smeagol: No... No.
Faramir: What did they steal?
Gollum: Myyy PRECIOUSSS.
Sam: Mr. Frodo, put the ring on; just this once, disappear.
Frodo: I can't... You were right, Sam. The ring is taking me. If I put it on he will find me.
Sam: It's the Ring, isn't it?
Frodo: It's getting heavier.
Sam: This looks strangely familiar.
Frodo: Because we've been here before. We're going in circles!
Frodo: Maybe he does deserve to die, but now that I see him I do pity him.
Frodo: Stop! This creature is bound to me and I to him. He is our guide.
Treebeard: We have just agreed...
[
Merry and Pippin lean in]
Merry: Yes?
Treebeard: I have told your names to the Entmoot, and we have agreed you are not orcs.
Pippin: Well, that's good news.
Gimli: Whatever luck you live by... let's hope it lasts the night.
Legolas: You're friends are with you, Aragorn.
Gimli: Let's hope they last the night...
Treebeard: You must understand, young Hobbit, it takes a long time to say anything in Old Entish. And we never say anything unless it is worth taking a long time to say.
Merry: It's been going for hours.
Pippin: They must have decided something by now.
Treebeard: Decided? No, we have just finished saying "Good Morning".
Merry: But it's night time already! You can't take forever!
Treebeard: Now, don't be hasty, master Merriadoc.
Merry: We're running out of time!
Saruman: Rohan, my lord, is ready to fall.
Treebeard: [
about orcs] They come with fire, they come with axes... gnawing, biting, breaking, hacking, burning. Destroyers and usurpers, curse them.
Treebeard: My home is deep in the forest near the roots of the mountains.
Treebeard: I promised Gandalf I would keep you safe and safe is where I'll keep you.
Gimli: You'll find more cheer in a graveyard.
Treebeard: We Ents cannot hold back this storm. We must weather such things as we have always done.
Merry: How can that be your decision?
Treebeard: This is not our war.
Merry: But you're part of this world, aren't you?... You must help... please.
Treebeard: Many of these trees were my friends. Creatures I had known from nut or acorn.
Pippin: I'm sorry, Treebeard.
Treebeard: They had voices of their own. Saruman! A wizard should know better!
Theoden: Gandalf.
Gandalf: Breathe the free air again, my friend.
Theoden: [
stands up from the throne] Dark have been my dreams of late.
[
looks at his hands]
Gandalf: Your fingers would remember their old strength better... if they grasped your sword.
Theoden: I know your face, Eowyn.
[
from extended version]
Sam: Can you see the bottom?
Frodo: No. Don't look down, Sam, just keep going!
Sam: [
drops a small box] Ouagh! Catch It! Grab it, Mr. Frodo!
[
Frodo catches it, loses his grip and then lands on the ground]
Frodo: I think I found the bottom.
Sam: It's not natural. None of it.
Frodo: What's in this?
Sam: Nothin'. Just a bit of seasoning. I thought maybe if we was havin' a roast chicken one night or something...
Frodo: Roast chicken?
Sam: You never know.
Man Flesh Uruk: What is it? What do you smell?
Mauhur: Man flesh. They've picked up our trail.
Gimli: [
out of breath] I'm wasted on cross-country! We Dwarves are natural sprinters, very dangerous over short distances.
Eowyn: Leave me alone, snake!
Wormtongue: Oh, but you are alone. Who knows what you have spoken to the darkness, alone, in the bitter watches of the night, when all your life seems to shrink, the walls of your bower closing in about you, a hutch to trammel some wild thing in? So fair, yet so cold like a morning of pale Spring still clinging to Winter's chill.
Eowyn: Your words are poison!
Hma: I cannot allow you before Theoden King so armed, Gandalf Greyhame... by order of Grima Wormtongue.
[
Gandalf nods, and they hand over their weapons]
Hma: Your staff.
Gandalf: Oh... you would not part an old man from his walking stick?
[
Hama lets them through; Gandalf winks at Aragorn]
Eomer: Look for your friends, but do not trust to hope. It has forsaken these lands.
Pippin: [
of Treebeard] Don't talk to it, Merry. Don't encourage it.
Treebeard: That doesn't make sense to me. But, then again, you are very small.
Pippin: And whose side are you on?
Treebeard: Side? I am on nobody's side, because nobody is on my side, little orc.
Eowyn: My Lord! Aragorn! I am to be sent with the women into the caves.
Aragorn: That is an honorable charge.
Eowyn: To mind the children, to find food and bedding when the men return. What renown is there in that?
Aragorn: My Lady, there may come a time for valor without renown. Who then will your people look to in the last defense?
Eowyn: Let me stand at your side.
Aragorn: I cannot command it.
[
pause; Aragorn turns to walk away from her]
Eowyn: You do not command the others to stay! They fight beside you because they would not be parted from you! Because they love you.
[
Aragorn stops, and she realizes she has said too much]
Eowyn: I am sorry.
[
to the Orcs]
Saruman: There will be no dawn... for men.
Legolas: They run as if the very whips of their masters were behind them.
Gandalf: From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak I fought with the Balrog of Morgoth... Until at last I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountain side... Darkness took me, and I strayed out of thought and time... The stars wheeled overhead, and every day was as long as a life age of the earth... But it was not the end. I felt life in me again. I've been sent back until my task is done.
[
Gandalf the White whistles and a white horse appears]
Legolas: That is one of the Mearas, unless my eyes are cheated by some spell.
Gandalf: Shadowfax. He is the lord of all horses and has been my friend through many dangers.
Frodo: [
bewitched] They're here, they've come.
Sam: You know I don't usually hold with foreign food, but this Elvish stuff - it's not bad.
Frodo: Nothing dampens your spirits Sam.
Sam: [
looks at the nearing rain clouds] Those rain clouds might.
Frodo: [
waking up from a nightmare] Gandalf!
Sam: What is it, Mr. Frodo?
Frodo: Nothing... just a dream.
Gandalf: I will draw you, Saruman, as poison is drawn from a wound.
Aragorn: [
Théoden threatens to kill Wormtongue] No, my lord - let him go. Enough blood has been spilt on his account.
Pippin: The closer we are to danger, the farther we are from harm. It's the last thing he'll expect.
Merry: Are you mad? We will be caught for sure.
Pippin: Not this time.
Theoden: Simbelmyne. Ever has it grown on the tombs of my forebears. Now it shall cover the grave of my son. Alas, that these evil days should be mine. The young perish and the old linger. That I should live to see that last days of my house.
Gandalf: Théodred's death was not of your making.
Theoden: No parent should have to bury their child.
Gandalf: He was strong in life. His spirit will find the way to the halls of your fathers.
Frodo: The Ring will not save Gondor. It only has the power to destroy. Please, let me go.
Sam: You want to know what happened to Boromir? Do you want to know why your brother died? He tried to take the Ring from Frodo, after swearing an oath to protect him! He tried to kill him! The Ring drove your brother mad.
Treebeard: I always like going South; somehow, it feels like going downhill.
Faramir: So this is the answer to all the riddles: here in the wild I have you, two halflings and a host of men at my call, and the Ring of Power within my grasp.
Elrond: Our time here is ending, Arwen's time is ending. Let her go... let her take the ship into the West. Let her bear her love for you to the Undying Lands, there it will be ever green...
Aragorn: ...but never more than a memory.
Sam: Mordor... the one place in Middle-Earth we don't want to see any closer... the one place we're trying to get to... is just where we can't get. Let's face it, Mr. Frodo. We're lost!
Gimli: [
failing to see over the wall] What's happening out there?
Legolas: Shall I describe it to you?
Gimli: [
turns] Hmm?
Legolas: Or would you like me to find you a box?
[
Gimli laughs]
Saruman: A new power is rising. Its victory is at hand. This night the land will be stained with the blood of Rohan. March to Helm's Deep. Leave none alive. To war!
Gollum: I found it, I did. A way through the marshes. Orcs don't use it. Orcs don't know it. They go round for miles and miles. Come hobbitses, soft and quick as shadows we must be.
Elrond: He is not coming back. Why do you linger here when there is no hope?
Arwen: There is still hope.
Elrond: If Aragorn survives this war, you will still be parted. If Sauron is defeated and Aragorn made king and all that you hope for comes true you will still have to taste the bitterness of mortality. Whether by the sword or the slow decay of time, Aragorn will die. And there will be no comfort for you, no comfort to ease the pain of his passing. He will come to death an image of the splendor of the kings of Men in glory undimmed before the breaking of the world. But you, my daughter, you will linger on in darkness and in doubt as nightfall in winter that comes without a star. Here you will dwell bound to your grief under the fading trees until all the world is changed and the long years of your life are utterly spent.
[
during the Battle of Helm's Deep, Gimli has killed an Uruk-Hai warrior]
Gimli: Legolas! Two already!
Legolas: I'm on seventeen!
Gimli: Huh? I'll have no pointy-ear outscoring me!
[
kills another one]
Legolas: [
shoots two more arrows] Nineteen!
[
from the extended edition]
Boromir: You give him no credit and yet he tries to do your will. He loves you, Father.
Denethor: Do not trouble me with Faramir. I know his uses and they are few.
Grima Wormtongue: His staff. I told you to take the Wizard's staff.
Theoden: Look at my men. Their courage hangs by a thread. If this is to be our end, then I would have them make such an end, as to be worthy of remembrance.
Aragorn: Gimli, lower your axe.
Legolas: They have feelings, my friend. The elves began it, waking up the trees, teaching them to speak.
Gimli: Talking trees. What do trees have to talk about, hmm... except the consistency of squirrel droppings?
Legolas: Forgive me. I mistook you for Saruman.
Gandalf: I am Saruman. Or rather, Saruman as he should have been.
[
from extended version]
Merry: [
watching Saruman look out at the ruin of Isengard from the tower] He doesn't look too happy, does he?
Pippin: Not too happy at all, Merry.
Merry: Still, I suppose the view would be quite nice from up there.
Pippin: Oh yes, its a quality establishment. I hear the staff are VERY good.
Sam: Captain Faramir, you have shown your quality, sir - the very highest.
Faramir: The Shire must truly be a great realm, Master Gamgee, where gardeners are held in high honor.
Pippin: Merry?
Merry: What, Pip?
Pippin: I'm hungry.
[
after falling off from the horse]
Gimli: That was deliberate, it was deliberate.
Sam: We're innocent travelers.
Faramir: There are no travelers in this land... only servants of the Dark Lord.
Frodo: We are bound to an errand of secrecy. Those who claim to oppose the enemy would do well not to hinder us.
Saruman: We have only to remove those who oppose us.
Wormtongue: Why do you lay these troubles on an already troubled mind?
Gollum: Sneaky little hobbitses.
Legolas: Look at them. They're frightened. You can see it in their eyes.
[
All the men turn to look at him]
Legolas: [
in Elvish] And they should be. Three hundred... against ten thousand!
Aragorn: [
in Elvish] They have a better chance defending themselves here than at Edoras...
Legolas: [
in Elvish] Aragorn... they cannot win this fight. They are all going to die!
Aragorn: [
in English] Then I shall die as one of them!
Eomer: How long has it been since Saruman bought you? What was the promised price, Grima? When all the Men are dead you would take your share of the treasure?
[
Wormtongue looks at Eowyn]
Eomer: Too long have you watched my sister. Too long have you haunted her steps.
[
Eomer is seized by two guards]
Wormtongue: You see much, Eomer son of Eomund. Too much.
[
Eomer is beaten by the guards]
Wormtongue: You are banished forthwith from the Kingdom of Rohan... under pain of death.
Aragorn: [
about the orcs] Their pace has quickened. They must have caught our scent. Hurry!
Legolas: Come on, Gimli!
Gimli: Three days and nights pursuit. No food, no rest. No sign of our quarry, but what bare rock can tell!
Gollum: Oh! Cruel hobbit! It does not care if we be hungry. It does not care if we should die! Not like Master. Master cares. Master knows. Yes, precious...
[
Frodo takes hold of the ring]
Gollum: Once it takes hold of us it never lets go.
[
Shadowfax rears]
Aragorn: Gandalf.
Gandalf: Theoden king stands alone.
Eomer: Not alone. Rohirrim!
[
Rohirrim gather behind him]
Theoden: Eomer!
Eomer: TO THE KING!
Eomer: [
whistles] Hasufel! Arod! May these horses bear you to better fortune than their former masters.
[
from extended version]
Legolas: Final count, forty-two.
Gimli: Forty-two? Oh, that's not bad for a pointy-eared elvish princeling. Hmph! I myself am sitting pretty on forty-THREE.
Legolas: [
takes out an arrow, and shoots the Uruk Gimli is sitting on in the stomach] Forty-three.
Gimli: He was already dead!
Legolas: He was twitching.
Gimli: He was *twitching* because he's got my axe EMBEDDED IN HIS NERVOUS SYSTEM!
[
rattles the handle of his ax; the Uruk's arms and legs twitch]
Gamling: Every villager able to wield a sword has been sent to the armory... my lord?
Theoden: Who am I, Gamling?
Gamling: You are our king, sire.
Theoden: And do you trust your king?
Gamling: Your men, my Lord, will follow you to whatever end.
Theoden: To whatever end...
[
after Legolas has shot and killed a Warg heading toward Gimli]
Gimli: But that one counts as mine!
[
about the Ring Wraiths]
Sam: I thought they were dead!
Gollum: Dead? No, you cannot kill them. No.
[
from extended version]
Boromir: Remember today, little brother.
[
from extended version]
[
looking at the elvish rope]
Frodo: We can't leave this here for someone to follow us down.
Sam: Who's going to follow us down here, Mr. Frodo?
Sam: It's a shame, really. Lady Galadriel gave me that. Real elvish rope.
Sam: Well, there's nothing for it - it's one of my knots. It won't come free in a hurry.
[
tugs rope, rope falls]
Frodo: Real Elvish rope.
Gimli: Keep breathing. That's the key. Breathe.
Treebeard: The Ents are going to war.
[
after meeting with Gandalf in Fangorn Forest]
Aragorn: In one thing you haven't changed, my friend - you still speak in riddles.
Snaga: Just a mouthful. A bit off the flank!
[
from the extended version]
Treebeard: I believe you will enjoy this next one, too. It is one of my own compositions. Ahem. 'Beneath the roof of sleeping... leaves and dreams of trees untold, When woodland halls are... green... and cool, and the wind is in the west, Come back to me... Come... back... to me, And say my land is... best.'
[
from extended version]
Faramir: Good Speech. Nice and short.
Boromir: Leaves more time for drinking!
[
from the extended version]
Pippin: Why are there so few of you, when you live so long? Are there Ent children?
Treebeard: [
Sadly] Brrharroom. There have been no Entings for a terrible long count of years.
Merry: Why is that?
Treebeard: We lost the Entwives.
Pippin: Oh, I'm sorry. How did they die?
Treebeard: Die? No. We *lost* them. And now, we cannot *find* them.
[
hopefully]
Treebeard: I don't suppose you've seen Entwives in the Shire?
Merry: Can't say that I have. You, Pip?
Pippin: [
thinks for a moment] What do they look like?
Treebeard: [
pauses] Hrrooom... I... don't... remember... now.
[
scene from extended version]
Merry: You just said something... treeish!
[
scene from extended version]
Merry: You're taller.
Pippin: Who?
Merry: You!
Pippin: Than what?
Merry: Than *me*!
Pippin: I've always been taller than you.
Merry: Pippin, everyone knows *I'm* the tall one. *You're* the short one.
Pippin: Please, Merry. You're what, three-foot-six? At the most? Whereas me, I'm pushing three-seven, three-eight.
Merry: Three-foot-eight? You did something.
[
scene from extended version]
Gimli: This new Gandalf is more grumpy than the old one.
Theoden: Your leechcraft would have had me crawling on all fours like a beast!
Legolas: They're taking the hobbits to Isengard.
Faramir: [
to Frodo and Sam] My men tell me that you are Orc spies.
Sam: Spies! Now wait just a minute!
Faramir: Well, if you're not spies, then who are you?
[
they remain silent, Faramir sighs and sits]
Faramir: Speak!
Frodo: We are Hobbits of the Shire. Frodo Baggins is my name and this is Samwise Gamgee.
Faramir: Your bodyguard?
Sam: His gardener.
Faramir: And where is your skulking friend? That gangrel creature. He had an ill-favoured look.
Frodo: [
reluctant] There was no other. We set out from Rivendell with seven companions. One we lost in Moria. Two were my kin. A dwarf there was also. And an elf. And two men. Aragorn, son of Arathorn, and Boromir of Gondor.
Faramir: [
solemn] You are a friend of Boromir?
Frodo: Yes, for my part.
Faramir: It would grieve you then to learn that he is dead.
Frodo: [
shocked] Dead? How? When?
Faramir: As one of his companions, I had hope you would tell me. He was my brother.
Eomer: What business does an Elf, a Man, and a Dwarf have in the Riddermark? Speak quickly!
Gimli: Give me your name, Horse-master, and I shall give you mine.
Eomer: [
gets off horse] I would cut off your head, Dwarf, if it stood but a little higher from the ground.
Legolas: [
prepares bow and arrow] You would die before your stroke fell.
[
Rohirrim point spears at Legolas]
Aragorn: [
signals for Legolas to bring down his weapon] I am Aragorn, son of Arathorn. This is Gimli, son of Gloin, and Legolas of the Woodland Realm. We are friends of Rohan, and of Theoden, your King.
Eomer: Theoden no longer recognizes friend from foe. Not even his own kin.
[
takes off helmet]
Eomer: Saruman has poisoned the mind of the king and claimed lordship over these lands. My company are those loyal to Rohan, and for that we are banished. The White Wizard is cunning. He walks here and there they say, as an old man hooded and cloaked. And everywhere his spies slip past our nets.
Aragorn: We are no spies. We track a party of Uruk-Hai, Westward across the plain. They have taken two of our friends captive.
Eomer: The Uruks are destroyed. We slaughtered them during the night
Gimli: But there were two Hobbits! Did you see two Hobbits with 'em?
Aragorn: They would be small. Only children to your eyes.
Eomer: We left none alive. We piled the carcasses and burned them.
Gimli: Dead?
Eomer: I am sorry.
[
whistles]
Eomer: Hasufel! Arod! May these horses bear you to better fortune than their former masters. Farewell.
[
puts on helmet, gets on horse]
Eomer: Look for your friends. But do not trust to hope. It has forsaken these lands.
